Root Cause Analysis

Participants will learn how to effectively perform root cause analysis in order to identify the true cause of problems. Students will develop skills to write effective problem statements, identify the conditions or actions immediately preceding or surrounding the problem, and understand the reasons why these causes occurred. This course will examine some of the most popular methods for root cause analysis including “The 5 Whys”, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), Pareto Analysis, fault tree analysis, and the Ishikawa diagram (Fishbone diagram or cause and effect).

In addition, the course will review the differences between corrective and preventive action and when each tool is used. At the end of the class, students will have a basic understanding of problem solving techniques and how to apply them in day-to-day business situations.

Lecture will be supplemented with classroom exercises to strengthen the participant’s understanding of the methods presented.
